Maternal
By kate on May 28th, 2007
I’ve been home full-time with Ruby for just over a week, and in that time our relationship has changed dramatically.
I feel like a mother for the first time.
I’ve been hesitating to discuss this, but I had a lot of trouble bonding with Ruby. It had nothing to do with her (of course), but was a […]

A whole new way of sleeping
By kate on March 1st, 2006
I realized recently that my whole perspective on sleep has changed during pregnancy. Before, if I was woken up once in the middle of the night, I considered it a serious interruption and felt like I hadn’t gotten a good night’s sleep.
Now, I wake up every two or three hours throughout the night, to go […]

No more pencils, no more books, no more boss’s dirty looks!
By kate on March 1st, 2006
My last day of work was yesterday, and it really feels like summer vacation. I should have at least a few days to relax and enjoy the time off. This weekend, there’ll be some hard work as we will finally be able to move some furniture and things into the basement (it will be mostly […]

Inflation
By kate on February 26th, 2006
After several days of focusing on the swelling in my hands, I took a minute to look at my legs and feet, only to discover that they are now hilariously swollen. They already looked like someone else’s extremities, but now they’re losing all their curve and definition as they get more swollen.
This particular symptom is […]

We have a doula!
By kate on February 26th, 2006
Steve and I had gone back and forth on whether we wanted to have a birth doula or not. After interviewing one woman who was not a good fit for us, we were leaning against it. However, one local doula, Alissa Wehrman, was highly recommended by both our midwives and an aerialist friend, so we […]

It hurts
By kate on February 22nd, 2006
The swelling in my hands has gotten painful. Several joints in my thumbs and index fingers are tender to the touch, and worse when in motion. The only time it feels OK is if I’m not moving my hands at all, or if I’m using the computer. (Believe it or not, mousing/typing is the easiest […]

General Update
By kate on February 17th, 2006
This weekend, we cross a big milestone: what we’re calling Term Day. That’s the day when I’ve completed my 37th week, and Zippy is considered “full term.” This is important because after that point, we can give birth in the birth center instead of the hospital. Before that point, I could probably give birth with […]

No baby here!
By kate on February 13th, 2006
Steve surprised me tonight with an amazing present: a hand-sewn hat for Zippy! We’ve been looking for a nice hat for her, but hadn’t found anything in stores that we liked. He made it in secret, mostly late at night while watching hockey after I had gone to bed.
When we were in Vietnam, we heard […]

So, when are you due?
They’ve noticed I’m pregnant and need to let me know they know. This is how they always start.
KATE:
In March.
To conserve syllables, I omit the actual date. Nobody seems to mind, unless they have a March birthday, in which case it’s very important.

A sad day
By kate on February 2nd, 2006
Today I had to take my wedding ring off. It’s never been off my finger since we got married, so it felt weird and sad. My hands have been getting a bit swollen (along with my feet and ankles), and I noticed this morning that it was almost impossible to slip the ring over my […]

Stuff Stuff Stuff
By kate on January 30th, 2006
Zippy’s birth is seeming more imminent now, so today Steve and I buckled down and went on a shopping trip to acquire some things we don’t yet have. At the end of it, I feel like we’re in pretty good shape for the first few months of her life. We have the small stuff and […]

General update
By kate on January 29th, 2006
I’ve started taking a weekly pre-natal yoga class at Whole Life Yoga in Greenwood. I usually prefer exercise that is more strenuous and goal-focused (such as soccer and aerial), but I thought that during pregnancy when I have less energy, yoga would be a better workout. It is a decent workout, so I’ll keep up […]

What falls on the floor, stays on the floor
By kate on January 29th, 2006
I’m at that point in pregnancy where bending over is uncomfortable to impossible (depending on Zippy’s position and what I’ve eaten). Sometimes I make such a huffy puffery putting on my shoes that Steve comes over and ties them for me.
My worst pregnancy complication at the moment, though, is the hand and wrist pain. I’ve […]

Baby Names
By kate on January 27th, 2006
Here’s a humorous list of baby names from McSweeney’s. I particularly like “Stevelyn”.
I’ve been too busy to post anything lately, but there isn’t much news. I’m coping with some nerve issues in my wrist (pregnancy-related carpal tunnel), which wasn’t really a surprise because my mom got the same thing. Otherwise, there’s not too much to […]
