What falls on the floor, stays on the floor

By kate on January 29th, 2006

I’m at that point in pregnancy where bending over is uncomfortable to impossible (depending on Zippy’s position and what I’ve eaten). Sometimes I make such a huffy puffery putting on my shoes that Steve comes over and ties them for me.

My worst pregnancy complication at the moment, though, is the hand and wrist pain. I’ve […]

Baby Names

By kate on January 27th, 2006

Here’s a humorous list of baby names from McSweeney’s. I particularly like “Stevelyn”.
I’ve been too busy to post anything lately, but there isn’t much news. I’m coping with some nerve issues in my wrist (pregnancy-related carpal tunnel), which wasn’t really a surprise because my mom got the same thing. Otherwise, there’s not too much to […]

Thoughts after first birthing class

By kate on January 18th, 2006

We attended our first (of six) birthing classes tonight, at the home of our instructor, Penny Simkin. She’s been a childbirth educator for almost forty years, taught almost ten thousand women/couples, and literally wrote the book on it all. We got a copy of that book, as well as a book she wrote for birth […]

Hello from Portland

By kate on January 15th, 2006

Steve and I are enjoying a fun weekend in Portland. We’re staying at the Hotel Vintage Plaza, in one of their “starlight rooms”. The room has a 45-degree window that gives a view of the sky (for most patrons) or the skyscraper across the street (in our case). The room is decorated with a classy, […]

General pregnancy update

By kate on January 10th, 2006

Our house is going through lots of changes! We’ve begun the basement renovations (you can read Steve’s renovation blog here). This weekend, we were without heat because our gas was off, so we decided it would be a good time to spend our Sunday moving furniture around (to keep warm, don’t ya know). After I […]

Branding & the Baby

By steve on December 29th, 2005

[this entry by Steve]

Kate and I are fairly anti-brand-name. Whenever we buy a new bag, we take scissors or a felt pen to the logo to make it disappear. I did the same with the stickers on my laptop. I believe the value of something is intrinsic in the object itself, not […]

Another growth spurt

By kate on December 29th, 2005

In the past two days, Zippy has gone on another growth spurt. My belly feels more stretched and large, and Zippy sticks out most of the time (as opposed to being more toward my back). I can also feel her moving most of the day. There is less kicking, but more shifting around, and it’s […]

False alarm

By kate on December 22nd, 2005

I got a call this morning from Michelle, our midwife, to let me know my gestational diabetes test had come back negative (meaning I don’t have it). Hooray!

One of my measurements was close to the threshold, however, so she recommended I go in for a session of nutritional counseling to be on the safe side. […]

The 3-hour test

By kate on December 21st, 2005

I went for the gestational diabetes test today, although I don’t get the results until tomorrow.

I had to fast for 12 hours beforehand, so I arrived hungry and had to drink a small beverage (~12 oz.) containing a HUNDRED grams of sugar* within 5 minutes. It was rather sweet. I wondered if feeding me spoonfuls […]

A phone call from the doctor is never good news

By kate on December 16th, 2005

I got the results of my gestational diabetes screen today by phone. Because she called, I guessed right away that the test had come back positive, and it had.

Before you worry overly, let me say that this screening test generates a ton of false positives (~67% of positives are false; only one-third end up […]

Cruising along

By steve on December 16th, 2005

[this entry by Steve]

As Kate mentioned in her entry a few days ago, we’re pretty well-adjusted to the pregnancy at this point. Kate doesn’t look significantly more pregnant on a week to week basis. Kate’s reduced wardrobe, the heating pad in the bed, and her attachment to working in her big orange recliner […]

Midwife and Pizza

By steve on December 16th, 2005

[this entry by Steve]

We had a visit with our midwife on Wednesday. Overall it went fine — nothing exciting to report. We met with Michelle this time (our previous two meetings were with her partner, Tracy). I like both of the midwives so far, and I’d be comfortable with either one at […]

The Not-Shower

By kate on December 15th, 2005

There was a really great baby shower last weekend, but it wasn’t for us. It was for Steve’s parents - a grandparent shower! Now, they have baby stuff that we can use when we visit, instead of having to lug it along, which is going to be fabulous.
My lovely sister-in-law, Nicole (temporarily back from Toronto), […]

Pregnancy Update

By kate on December 15th, 2005

I haven’t written much lately, because during this stretch it didn’t feel like much had changed. Now, though, as I enter the third trimester, I finally have a few things to report.

Zippy seems to have had another growth spurt lately. Not only is she bigger, but she’s moving more frequently and vigorously. Her kicks […]
